Language study skills include everything that you employ in your study of language.
And while the list of strategies and techniques for language study is long, with new technologies, inventions and new "twists" for using traditional resources; the key to language study is consistent practice.
Consistent practice for learning a language does not mean that you have to practice in the same way with the same resources. What is required for consistent practice is that you keep your interactions with the target language fresh in your mind.
Your language study also depends upon how you want to perform with your new language skills.
for example, practice of reading, writing and spelling requires different skills than conversing, lecturing or signing. Translation, (generally for a published text), requires different skills tha interpreting (generally on-the-fly) relating of what a speaker is saying.
Performing on a high-school or college exam requires different skills (generally more grammar and vocabulary skills) than making your way through a foreign country. And, traveling though the countryside of a foreign country requires different language skills than living in a cosmopolitan foreign city.
For college language study, textbooks come with lab CDs, workbooks and online resources. These are often expensive, and focus upon structured grammar approaches to language learning. However, the cultural component of language learning comprises a minimal amount of this learning path. Besides, skills for answering a written exam differ from the skills required to converse with native speakers on their own turf.
